"An artist's expression is his soul made apparent, his schooling, as well as his
"cool" being exhibited. Behind every motion, the music of his soul is made visible. Otherwise, his motion is
empty and empty motion is like an empty word -- no meaning."
Bruce Lee

Vagabond In Happyland: The Artist Statement
Much of my artwork comes from life or pictures. As much as I appreciate working from observational material, I
understand the benefit of experimenting with abstraction and spontaneity. My creative expressions are a collaboration
of both source material and intuitive artistic inspiration. Each approach taps into a different creative side of the
artist.
Many of my works of art are carefully planned. I religiously keep a sketchbook of doodles, photographs, and thoughts.
Images are manipulated, combined, and arranged in re-purposed environments through digital collage. I create dramatic
compositions that highlight my ideas and feelings through themes that are often universal. With a sketch in hand, I
focus my efforts on color, form, and technique.
In my more intuitive artworks, process begins with playful yet sophisticated doodling. Without the stress to "get it
right," I take risks and follow my creative impulses as I strive for balance and unity in the composition. This active and
reactive process is liberating as ideas are played out without knowing the outcome. Outlandish forms provide the
picture-plane with a structure closer to a land of dreams than reality. My improvisational works can be witty, dark,
colorful, fantastical, political, erotic, hallucinogenic, nostalgic, or spiritual all at once. They are open-ended in
meaning and deliciously suggestive to interpretation.
It is very important to me that my art has a message. One recurrent theme is the vagabond or lost traveler searching
for "Happyland" in a world of chaos. His appearance or lack of one in an artwork is of great significance. This
hypothetical dreamer is confronted with various situations, challenges and crossroads. The viewer may experience hope,
humor, curiosity or disgust. Will the vagabond fall or soar, discover truth or deceit, experience love or rejection?
The artwork is the psychological arena where these tales unfold and life's uncertainties are explored.
